Introduction:

The women’s tradition of drumming in Southern Italy and the Mediterranean in general has been passed down through the ages since ancient times.  This is a course that puts students in touch with the roots of civilization in a meaningful, hands-on fashion.  Ritual drumming induces communication with the essential core and is of benefit to people in the performing arts and those who want to teach performing arts.  The course will enable students to learn to empower both themselves and others through the tarantella dance & rhythms.

These ancient forms of music and dance were used in all Mediterranean regions including Italy for centuries, to heal  mainly by women, who suffered a form of mental depression known as tarantismo, attributed to the mythical venomous bite of the tarantula spider.   According to what Alessandra observed in her  practice and personal experience in teaching healing workshops worldwide, “tarantismo” in psychological terms may be defined as different abnormal reactions due to the possible sexual abuse of the times. Some of these reactions can cause sexual dysfunction with  symptoms like  depression, suicidal  mania, hysterical reactions with aggressive behaviors. Now a days this form of music therapy targets especially women who have been abused and suffer from emotional

The presentation will begin as I introduce myself and my relationship to the music of Southern Italy.  I will present a brief overview of percussion in the Mediterranean and its roots in ancient times.

We will trace this style of percussion through the ages, from its ancient Greek roots, through the Italian Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its relevance today.  We will study and practice basic “tarantella “tamburello “ techniques:  holding the drum with emphasis on arm movement, hand technique for triplets, and the 6/8 and 4/4 rhythms.  We will also address the variations of hand technique from the different regions of Southern Italy as:

* Tammorriata a 4/4 rhythm played on the large drum called the Tammorra, originally from Naples with a strong African influence in the rhythm, played in honor of the Black Madonna, to accompany a beautiful ritual dance. Originated in ancient times for the Earth Mother Goddsses Cybele & Isis.

** Rhythm & Dance of San Rocco- a Medieval healing 6/8 rhythm from Calabria done in honor of San Rocco to send away the plague and danced in circle spinning.

Ends with final drum circle and whirling movements.

 Pizzica Tarantata , a very fast 6/8 rhythm from Puglia, with different accents - which originated as music therapy to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula, played on medium size tambourines with a double row of jingles as people frantically danced for days during the Summer Solstice. This rhythm and dance date back to the ecstatitic rites of Dionysus, as Southern Italy was part of Greece known as Magna Grecia.

The sessions end with healing chants in honor of the Black Madonna and the Sun.

Objectives:

  • ·         To introduce the participants to an ancient form of music and dance therapy used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula and to come to understand the healing and stress-relieving effect of these rhythms and dances.
  • ·         --To make the participants feel part of community-healing rituals as they use their bodies in movements that help open the energy points and  stay grounded

Students who complete this course will

  • Be introduced to the rich rhythms of Southern Italy
  • Learn the history of this commanding tambourine style
  • Learn powerful Italian technique of Neapolitan tarantella

Length:   60  or 120 Minutes or more
