Following Alessandra Belloni’s vision as part of the Black Madonna Center, for the first time, this summer, special students will have the opportunity to study and tour the area of Naples in the region of Campania.

This new powerful journey will introduce and transport students to a time and place where an unbroken and ancient tradition continues today with folk music, processions, devotional drumming, and dance.

Another special feature: Lectures by Egyptologist and Archeologist Armando Mei, about the goddess Isis & The Black Madonna.

As featured in Alessandra's book "Healing Journeys with the Black MAdonna ", Students will also be taken on short pilgrimages to four sacred sites of the Black Madonna: 1. Madonna Avvocata on a Beautiful Mountain on the Amalfi Coast 2. Black Madonna of Positano 3. Feast of the Black Madonna della Neve (August 5th) 4. Black Madonna of Montevergine and Black Madonna of Moiano (August 6 to August 8)

DAY 1 & 2: August 1-2nd VISIT TO THE BLACK MADONNA DELL’AVVOCATA - spectacular mountain above the Amlafi coast

During the workshops students will study the basic Italian tambourine and frame drumming techniques of different Tammorriata 4/4 rhythm in honor of the Black Madonna and the beautiful & sensual dance done by couples playing castanets. These workshops will take place during the days and some evenings in improvisational Neapolitan style.

These powerful workshops will incoude the special collaboration with Folk Musician, percussionist Neapolitan singer teacher Nando Citarella where students will learn traditional drumming, chanting, and dance dedicated to The Black Madonna.

Alessandra and Nando will start with an introduction on the ancient style of rhythm and dance known as the Tammurriata, which dates back to the rites of the Mother Earth Goddess Cybele, protector also all of gays, and transgenders as well as the Egyptian Goddess Isis, now worshiped as the Black Madonna all over the South of Italy.

Alessandra & Nando will lead participatory chants of devotion to the Sun (Jesce Sole), an ancient healing chant using the Lydian Scale or Neapolitan Scale as well as authentic chants and prayers to the Black Madonna.

DAY 3: August 4th VISIT TO LA MADONNA DI POSITANO -- the most beautiful town in the Amalfi Coast, where the Goddess Aphrote was worshipped in ancient times

Day 4: August 5th FEAST OF THE BLACK MADONNA DELLA NEVE Torre Annunziata/Pompei We’ll catch amazing moments of the unique re-enactment of the discovery and fishing of the Black Madonna, originally found in a large cage in the sea in the year 1350. This feast is held at sunset by sea near the Vesuvius with boats following the Madonna in procession along the coast, blessing the water and the town. This is an ancient ceremony with origins in the worship of the Goddess Aphrodite, and the African Orisha Yemanja, Goddess of Love and the Sea.

Day 5 - August 6th VISIT TO THE BLACK MADONNA OF MONTEVERGINE In the region of Irpinia , we will visit the Black Madonna of Montevergine, who is considered the most important of the seven sisters accompanied by the drumming and chanting of Nando Citarella and Alessandra Belloni.

This beautiful Black Madonna known as MAMMA SCHIAVONA, is worshipped in the ancient sacred site of the Earth Goddess Cybele. She continues to be venerated on a high sacred mountain, which pilgrims still climb barefoot today chanting and drumming in her honor. Here the rites of Cybele and Attis, and the transgenders’ devotion of the “femminielli” (young women) was popular in pre-christian times as they are today.

Day 6: August 7th VISIT TO THE MADONNA DELLA LIBERA Will end with a visit to the MADONNA DELLA LIBERA, our Lady of Freedom, near Benevento. This is a beautiful and powerful statue which has direct origins to the Egyptian Goddess Isis, as that area, known as Irpinia, was a settlement of the ancient Egyptian with a wide spread worship of Isis, the one who is really the ‘FIRST BLACK MADONNA AND CHILD”.

Here We will also be learning with well known scholar, writer and Egyptologist Armando Mei, now being featured on the GAIA NETWORK IN THE US. He will speak about The Egyptians settlement in Campania , who left a strong esoteric school in the region of Naples.

The unique style of tambourine playing and the ancient healing trance dance of the tarantella, used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula. Alessandra will also teach sacred chants of the Black Madonna from Southern Italy and other parts of the world. Drumming classes will be done on the beach every morning!

Objectives of the workshop are:

--To learn the history of this powerful tambourine style, originally done mainly by women, which dates back to the rites of the Mother Earth Goddess Cybele, now worshiped as the Black Madonna and to come to understand the healing and stress-relieving effect of these rhythms and dances.

--To bring women back in touch with their lost drumming tradition.

--To make the participants feel part of community-healing ritual

TAMMORRIATA – A powerful rhythm set to an African beat played in 4/4 time in honor of the black Madonna, originally ancient rites for the Earth Goddess Cybele. It accompanies a sensual dance from Naples danced with castanets to the rhythm of the large drum, called Tammorra.

RITMO E DANZA DI SAN ROCCO (SPINNING DANCE) – This dance, originating in Calabria during the Middle Ages. It was danced during the time of the plague to help people release the overpowering fear of death. Due to the trance-inducing movements and incessant spinning, many people enter ecstatic states during this dance, similar to the Whirling Dervish ceremonies.

THE PIZZICA TARANTATA – The wild 6/8 rhythm of the Pizzica, played on medium size tambourines and accompanied by dance and song, was performed as an exorcism ritual that produced a trance-like state beneficial for healing many mental-health disorders and imbalances. As part of a re-enactment of this healing ritual, participants will play a circle and learn the ceremony : a dance where they’ll create “spider-like” movements on the ground, releasing stress and blockages of energy.

Alessandra ends the sessions using the ocean drum, creating the sound of waves in a final relaxation invoking the healing power of the water with chants to the Goddess of the Sea, the Sun and the Black Madonna. Participants are encouraged to wear white and red, and women to wear skirts. Father Phil’s Course Description:

Special guest drummers from Italy to be announced REVIEW of DRUMS OF ILLMUNIATION December 2019 New York Theater Wire – Paul Berss

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9YDuAPa_mw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al9_6evJsqc In "Dreams of Illumination," Alessandra Belloni, a renowned percussionist and authority on Southern Italian traditional music, dance and theater, had the winning idea of presenting music that celebrates peace and healing representing three different cultures. This was realized at Theater for the New City with the presentation of her own I Giullari di Piazza (The Jesters of the Square), members of the Native American SilverCloud Singers and Dancers and African percussionist Kevin Nathaniel. The uniting of these three cultures--Southern Italian, African, and Native American--provided a unique and much appreciated experience for the audience, which included Mayor de Blasio and his wife. The program was true to the theme of unity, peace and healing, with musical and dance prayers for the healing of the planet, music and dancing to honor the Black Madonna, lullabies, and healing chants and dances, most native to their respective cultures. A truly unique program - entertaining, educational, great music and, as the program states, "inspired by the need to bring Light during the Solstice into this time of darkness."

Drum Magazine noted that "Italian-born virtuoso Alessandra Belloni is established as a unique phenomenon, not just a percussionist, but also an actress, lecturer, entertainer, and healer."

Jon Pareles of The New York Times, reviewing an I Giullari di Piazza show, remarked that "Ms. Belloni sang in an exultant voice. The songs blazed with an age-old momentum."

Stromboli is one of the seven Aeolian Islands of Sicily, also known as the Seven Sisters – just like the Black Madonnas. Alessandra has been visiting Tropea since 1980 when she and John LaBarbera came to learn the cultura e music populare, studying, eventually, with master folk musician Vittorio de Paola. You will see Vittorio playing the Tarantella Infuocata – the fiery tarantella—on an organetto – a button accordion. This 6/8 rhythm is part of the healing tradition of tarantellas that helps people break free from depression and sadness. You’re invited to get up, dance, and spin to this hypnotic tarantella as Alessandra plays tambourine to this traditional tarantella with her mentor. Tropea, which translates to “trophy,” was once part of Magna Grecia, although the town itself pre-dates the Greek colony. The small cobblestone streets wind their way down to the sea, where, legend has it, the Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna di Romania was found. La Madonna di Romania, whose icon dates to 1330, is responsible for many miracles in this small village which are celebrated with a powerful procession on her feast day on September 8th. in 1638, warning him of a major earthquake and saved Tropea as they carried her icon through the streets. During the Middle Ages she also protected the town from the plague. As our visit draws to a close, consider getting up from your seat to dance to the fiery, haunting rhythms of the tarantella that Alessandra performs with local musicians from the group OFFICINA KALABRA and dancer Anna Maria Pugliese. EPISODE 6 PART 2- Madonna dei Poveri | Seminara (Calabria) We will dance our way from Tropea to Seminara to the powerful drumming ritual and procession in Honor of LA MADONNA DEI POVERI, Our Lady of the Poor celebrated on August 14th continuing a tradition very popular in the Middle Ages as exorcism against the plague. on August 14th, for the feast of the Madonna dei Poveri. We gather in procession to the sound of snare drums led by Tonnino, the capo banda of the drummers. These drummers play complicated 6/8 tarantellas using drum sticks playing incredibly fast with a driving bass line underneath. In the first ritual, larger than life puppets known as i Giganti reenact the ancient fertility ritual that happens when the Italian Queen Mata and the African King Grifone meet. The puppets are dressed in regal splendor and, in a ritual tarantella dance that pre-dates the Middle Ages, they reenact a ritual courtship that results in a kiss symbolizing the unification of the African and Southern Italian cultures. We hear it in the collision of snare drums and tarantella, in the bass drum that echoes the heartbeat of the earth. Variations of this ritual can be found in Sicily, Malta, Spain, and even Brazil. In the second ritual of devotion a man dressed in white and blue carrying a palio -- a large flag -- erotically between his legs, the pole tied to his arm so that he can perform his circular dance. As the 6/8 drum plays and the crowds cheer, he careens against and into the earth, spinning and dropping to his knees in an ancient fertility rite. When we arrive at the church we find a large haunting statue. Carved of dark brown wood the color of the Earth itself, La Madonna dei Poveri her presence is overwhelming. She is dressed simply in an ancient tunic, wearing beautiful silver jewelry with her son on Her lap as she sits in an ornate throne that takes a dozen men to carry on procession through the town, followed by her devotees singing eviva Maria! and the palio bearer who dances erotically around the statue of the Madonna, as if he were going to impregnate her with his flag. Like the ritual of i gigante, this ritual ends with a kiss, completing the rite and promising the Earth will continue to nourish us if we continue to nourish her. Blessings to all, Alessandra Belloni EPISODE 4 – This the Madonna Alessandra is most devoted to, thanks to receiving a personal miracle. BLACK MADONNA DELLA LIBERA - Moiano (Benevento) - We continue in the mountains to Benevento, where we meet Our Lady of Freedom, la Madonna della Libera, also known as “la Brunetella” – the little dark one. This region was once an ancient settlement of the Egyptians and the cult of Isis on the Italian peninsula. Temples of Isis once studded this landscape of mountains and valleys, and the folk traditions of the region are directly descended from the rituals of these temples. On La Brunetella’s festa we have the rare opportunity to witness a ritual never before seen in North America: the strascino, a ritual banned by the Vatican where devotees throw themselves to the church floor to crawl, on their knees, to the Madonna’s altar. You will hear the women haunting chants to thank her for her many miracles during the procession and will learn following the lyrics. EPISODE 3 MADONNA NERA DI MONTEVERGINE - (Avellino) We travel to the beautiful sacred mountain of Montevergine, in the wild, beautiful mountainous region of Campania known as Irpinia. Her church is built upon the remains of a temple to the great Goddess Cybele: the Black mother Earth goddess from Anatolia, frequently depicted carrying a frame drum. We follow the path of the most devoted, climbing on foot up the sacred mountain, where we stop at the sacred and mysterious Throne of the Madonna -- a rock formation where, as legend has it, the Madonna rested when she climbed the mountain, leaving an imprint of her feet in the stone. At night we will meet the well-known tammorra maker Raffaele Inserra from Gragnano, the old singer Zi Giannino and the young one Gianfranco, for a great feast where we will play and dance, and people will have a chance to learn the authentic chant to the Black Madonna di Montevergine. You will learn this sacred chant following the lyrics. EPISODE 5 – LA MADONNA DEL SACRO MONTE DI VIGGIANO (BASILICATA) Next, we travel to Viggiano in the magical region of Basilicata, where we will visit the chapel of la Madonna del Sacro Monte. Here on this sacred mountain in the middle of magna Grecia, near the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Demeter -- the Greek mother goddess of the grain, of fertility, and of the Earth -- La Madonna, draped in gold, waits for us to arrive. Carved from olive wood and covered in solid gold leaf, this is one of the oldest statues of the Black Madonna in the world. Her feast day, which we will attend via archival footage, is filled with folk music and dance, including the tarantella. While women dance with cinti -- elaborate wax altars to the Madonna -- balanced carefully on their heads, we are introduced to three traditional southern Italian folk instruments: the zampogna, an Italian bagpipe; a double reed instrument called a ciaramella; and a small button accordion called an organetto. 7th ANNUAL VOYAGE OF THE BLACK MADONNA IN SOUTHERN ITALY

Italy - Various Locations

I AM PROUD TO SHARE THAT REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN for the 7th Pilgrimage to the Black Madonna this summer in Southern Italy! Following in the footsteps of the journey I wrote about in my new book that was released in the spring 2019. This tour is a journey to seven sacred sites of the Black Madonna, known in the Italian folk tradition as "the Seven Sisters." They are all connected to seven Goddesses that are part of the ancient worship of Mother Earth and the Moon Goddesses, and the archetype of the African Mother.

I will take people on the same journey as I have done for over 30 years as a devotion to the Black Madonna, and which inspired me to write the book HEALING JOURNEYS WITH THE BLACK MADONNA, recently published by Inner Traditions-Bear and Company. I am happy to share this very personal journey with you, one which will transform your life!

We will explore these sacred sites of the Madonnas and discover their connections to other Great Goddesses. The mysteries of the Black Madonna can be traced to pre-Christian times, specifically to the ancient practices of devotion to Isis, the Earth Goddess, and the African Mother - to the era when God was a woman, and she was black. It will be revealed that the sacred sites of the Black Madonna are still revered in Italy today, and the shamanic healing traditions of the Black Madonna are still alive today - just as powerful as they were millennia ago. The tour also features writer, archaeologist and Egyptologist Armando Mei as our guide in Pompeii and Torre Annunziata.

Every day of this tour has always been magical indeed over the past years, with people showing up to meet us by surprise - musicians, writers, even people I had not seen in ages! I realized that nothing was a coincidence - everything must have been planned by the GREAT MOTHER!

JOIN ME FOR THE BLACK MADONNA TOUR 2021

Itinerary: Arrival August 4th at Rome's airport to go to Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples. We will visit the following places and Black Madonnas:

August 5th Black Madonna della Neve, Torre Annunziata spectacular feast along the sea near Sorrento/Pompei on the Amalfi Coast. In the late afternoon we will watch the re-enactment of the fisherman fishing the Black Madonna found in a large cage in the sea. It is spectacular and very moving as she is connected to the Goddess Aphrodite. We will also do a ritual chant on the beach at sunset, a Medieval prayer to the Black Madonna.

August 6th Visit to Black Madonna of Positano, also by the Sea, a beautiful Byzantine Icon, also connected to Aphrodite. Positano is one of the most beautiful towns of the Amalfi coast, and we will spend the day there. As last year I will lead a beautiful ritual of purification in the sea, with white flowers, drumming and chants, all dressed in white and blue we will honor the Madonna del Mare, Aphrodite/Yemanja in the Afro- Brazilian tradition.

August 7th A visit to Pompeii -Led by writer/archeologist Armando Mei. The Temple of Isis is a testament to Egyptian influence over Roman religion. In Pompeii is preserved one of the most important temples dedicated to the Goddess Isis, in south Italy. Armando will focus on the connections between the origins of the Great Mother Culture and its evolution along the millennium. A travel through Ancient Sumerians and Egyptians Myths, among the ruins of the most famous ancient town of POMPEII.

Night of August 7th We will meet the well-known tammorra maker Raffaele Inserra from Gragnano and the young one Gianfranco, for a great feast at the great restaurant il Vigneto where we will play and dance, and people will have a chance to learn the authentic tammorriata, a very sensual and erotic dance done with castanets to the large drum called Tammorra, playing a powerful 4/4 rhythm.

August 8th We leave for the Black Madonna of Montevergine, also known as Mamma Schiavona (Serving Mother) a spectacular sacred Mountain near Avellino - (in the beautiful mountain region called Irpinia). This is the most important of the seven sisters, an ancient site and temple of the goddess Cybele, Black Mother Earth Goddess from Anatolia. We will go the famous throne (a special rock in the mountains called Seggia della Madonna) where healing miracles happen, where last year many people had a very powerful mystical experience. Up in the sanctuary we will play the tammorriata and sing for her. We will also enjoy the great local food and wine, as we rest in the restaurant up the mountain.

This region is called Irpinia and we will visit several powerful sites here:

August 9th Black Madonna in Moiano, near Benevento The powerful, beautiful MADONNA DELLA LIBERA, the one I am most devoted to and have personally received a miracle from. She is the most magical! This is also an ancient site of worship to the Goddess Isis. Last year I had an incredible break down and felt reborn after asking her to free me from sad moments of the past. Many people had the same experience! In the chapel we will also chant her traditional songs, that I learned from the old women of the town during the procession.

August 10 LA MADONNA NERA INCORONATA DI FOGGIA (Puglia, land of the tarantella!) We will travel to the famous Tavoliere delle Puglie, a beautiful landscape of agricultural land, to the Sanctuary of this mysterious Madonna Nera with the GOLD CROWN who appeared in the year 1001 in a very magical way. While shepherds were working in the field 2 bulls ran away to a tree and knelt down, as lightning and fire appeared for a long time. Suddenly a voice was heard saying I AM MARY MOTHER OF GOD! And I want my temple built here! And the beautiful statue of the Madonna Nera appeared right in the tree. And she made many miracles, including with a special anointing oil that always burns at her image and never goes out.

August 11 LEAVE FOR CALABRIA!! My favorite land! We will stay in the beautiful town of Tropea, in a hotel with great food and a breathtaking view of the beach and active volcano STROMBOLI! There we will finally have a couple of days of rest on the beach, swimming in the turquoise sea very similar to Hawaii. In Calabria we will meet and feast with my good friend and tarantella teacher Vittorio de Paola and have dinner and party in his beautiful restaurant on top of the mountain with a great view of the sea. This one of the highlights of the tour!

August 13 We will honor the Black Madonna del Tindari This is a magical place, where the Madonna del Tindares (Ethiopian name) was found in cave under the mountain, which we will visit, by enchanted lakes of salt water, and a beautiful turquoise sea, where we will do a purification ritual. The Madonna looks like an African totem and is inside the church on top of the mountain, with the inscription Nigra Sum Sed Formosa (I am Black and Beautiful). Next to the church we will visit the archeological site that has the temples of Demeter and Cybele and drum as we watch the most spectacular sunset over the sea.

August 14 We will go to the feast of the Black Madonna di Seminara, Madonna dei Poveri, celebrated with a wild drumming ritual, reenacting an ancient fertility rite, and giant Puppets that dance to the fast 6/8 rhythm of the tarantella (Giganti). Last year everyone was enchanted by the powerful rhythms of African origins, and seeing the giant puppets of the African King Courting the Italian Queen, thus bringing together these two cultures.

August 15 on the Day of the Assumption, the feast day of the Madonna, we will follow a beautiful procession of the Madonna of the Sea on a boat along the stunning coast of Tropea.

August 16 Morning departure for Rome's airport or Station from La Mezia, Calabria.

A great feature of this tour is the local folk traditions, the music of the tarantella the dancing, and the fantastic food, all fresh prepared according to the regional traditions, and the most amazing wine!! As we enter the favored land of Dionysus, god of Ecstasy and Wine! I am also blessed to bring my old friend and teacher of tamburello, tammorra maker Raffaele Inserra from Gragnano. We will spend an unforgettable night with him as we dance, drum, eat, and drink fantastic wine from Gragnano - some of the best in the world!

The cost of the tour is $2,900. FROM DR. MATTHEW FOX PREFACE: "It takes a certain fierceness to face climate change, the extinction of countless species, the disappearance of rain forests and trees and soil and animals in our times. There is, as the Sufi mystic Hafiz put it, a “fierce battle” going on, and people need to be awakened and aroused. This is one reason the Black Madonna is returning in our time—to wake us up from our anthropocentric (Pope Francis calls it our “narcissistic”) slumber. This is one reason why the African goddess Isis was often pictured wearing a headdress with rattles—to wake people up and to rattle our institutions, to awaken us from slumber.”
