Honoring the Sea Goddess: Yemaja, Yemanja & The Black Madonna
New York Open Center, 22 East 30th Street, New York, New York
Alessandra Belloni and ensemble at the The New York Open CenterThis concert is inspired by the Southern Italian and Brazilian purification rites and processions performed in the summer to honor the archetypal sea goddess. In Brazil she is called Yemaja (or Yemanja), from African culture; in Italy she is called the Black Madonna of the sea (or Aphrodite). Alessandra Belloni and a small ensemble of women musicians will recreate these traditional rituals with songs, chanting, dancing, drumming and offerings of flowers to these sea goddesses. Don’t miss this evening of unique, passionate music and joyous ritual.
