~ RHYTHM IS THE CURE ~ ONLINE CLASS IN ITALIAN TAMBOURINE & FRAME DRUMS Featuring the ancient healing rhythms of the tarantella. Led by internationally renowned singer, percussionist, and author - Alessandra Belloni Workshop Information: This workshop (90 minutes or 2 hours) will give people the means to fortify themselves against daily stress especially developed during the pandemic. Students will become empowered through discovery of the ancient art of frame drumming traditionally played during the time of the plague that will enable them to discover the means to achieve homeostatic balance and inner relief of stress, while restoring spiritual and physical energy. The workshop is designed to follow the method described in Alessandra Belloni’s book/DVD Rhythm is the Cure published by Mel Bay Publications and the traditions described in her new book “HEALING JOURNEYS WITH THE BLACK MADONNA” published by Inner Traditions – Bear & Company, rated 5 stars and best seller under dance on Amazon. Goals and Objectives: To introduce the participants to an ancient form of music & dance therapy used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula and to come to understand the healing and stress-relieving effect of these rhythms and dances. --To learn the history of this powerful tambourine style, originally done mainly by women, which dates back to the rites of the Mother Earth Goddess Cybele, now worshiped as the Black Madonna bringing women back in touch with their drumming tradition. --To make the participants feel part of community and to Become personally empowered by performing the rhythms and therefore able to reach out to empower others in their practices expelling any feelings of depression.

Variations of the basic 6/8 rhythm of the Tarantella that originated as music and dance therapy to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula featuring regional style from Calabria including: The rhythm of San Rocco & the Black Madonna from OUR LADY OF THE POOR- This rhythm is used to accompany a trance dance originating in Calabria during the Middle Ages. Both rhythm and dance were used during the time of the plague to heal people and as a release from overpowering fears of death by contagious disease. The students will be able to play Medieval chant CUNCTI SIMUS CONCANENTES, a beautiful prayer from the Middle Ages to the Black Madonna of Montserrat, (Spain) We will end with THE PIZZICA rhythm - a fast 12/8 rhythm, played on medium size tambourines with a double row of jingles, used to accompany the dance performed as a ritual which produces a trance-like state beneficial for the healing of many disorders and imbalances. This energetic dance originated as a cure for the mythical bite of the Tarantula, a form of depression known as tarantismo, which afflicted mainly women, often victims of abuse. Participants emerge feeling light and joyful after this healing journey through sound and rhythm.
